    One question I have kinda something similar to last video. If two people a teacher and a student have 8-12 hours of time a day to train do you believe they could progress faster in ranks due to more training time and dedication?

    Shame the art doesn't work. The 5th Dan test is VERY subjective. However, with that Said.. the Bujinkan has the best focus on UKEMI I've ever seen. Rolling on concrete and gravel is very impressive. Shame it's riddled with sexual offenses and manipulation.

    It's obvious the guy with the gun or knife wins. So MMA with guns and knives > MMA with fist and feet. You don't need to be a genius intellect to know that. It's only untrue if you are a cyborg from the future who can crush a man's skull with his bare hands and not feel any pain. (perhaps by that time you will have invented a lightsaber and then you revert back to the old rules again)

    I think because of the linear movement of point sparring that it gives a good window (or "gateway" if we want to use a more modern term) in learning one of the most difficult parts of any kind of sparring or fighting: distance management. That is, knowing when you are outside of kicking range, in kicking range, in punching range. This is a much more difficult and complex concept to learn in any kind of continuous sparring where movement is more dynamic and there are much more things to focus on. One of the big mistakes I see in a beginner sparring in boxing, muay Thai, kickboxing is that they underestimate how close they are to their opponent along with not yet having the footwork to get in and out of range. They are practically in the pocket and then wonder why their opponent is scoring so much. You will notice that in point sparring people learn and adapt much quicker to distance management.

    I started taking Kenpo back in 1975 with my cousin who was actually my first instructor. He was being taught by Sijo Muhammad better known as Steve Sanders of the BKF. My training had come to a stall due to life and family but a few years ago I had started back training with him at his dojo. He is one of many who was trained under Ed Parker after leaving Mr Muhammad (BKF) and is still teaching to this day. I’m 65 years old now and I still train to this date. Is has been many years but I continue to push through because like many I love Kenpo and without practicing it will be as if I missed out on a part of my life I value. To all those who are having thoughts of being able to continue my answer is to do it. You mat not be able to move as fast as you use to be but to me it’s like learning how to swim. Once you know how you never forget the basics of your foundation. Most importantly pass it on.

    I have done MMA and Karate point sparring. I have recently dove into combatives and when it comes to real world violence neither mma or point sparring prepare you very well for an ambush by 3 people with weapons. That said MMA teaches you how to take a hit. Point sparring is good for landing your strikes. The best part of point sparring is there are usually no weight classes or a very broad range in a weight class with division of over 160ilbs or under. This helps you learn how to deal with different body types and the attributes that come with them.

    Man i understand alot of your points and maybe due the nature of how we train but i feel like it builds bad habits. Pull punches and develop bad habits especially footwork. I personally feel you spar how you fight, if you dance and play tag it could translate in the streets. Not everyone but most ive seen. Thank you for your perspective sir 👍🙏 keep it up 😁

    I will say. I’m not starting the martial arts middle aged. I started Taekwondo in high school for a couple years. Served in the Marine corps for 21 years (MCMAP Black Belt), retired in 2020. Started back with both Kenpo (IKCA) and Tang Soo Do (WTSDA). I am also a little fluffy (5’10, 220). I get aches and pains. But I spar, I do full tournaments (Forms, Sparing and breaking). I do it all, jump spinning kicks to break boards, spar people 20 years younger than me… why? Because I refuse to let my age define me. My daughter is on the mat watching me train and I can’t show her weakness. Age is a number. Everyone is different. Know yourself, dr to your dr and know if you actually should have limits. NEVER let age (alone) define those limits. If I let age and my ailments define me, I would be training alone, in the forest, sparing with trees and complaining about everything. Life your best life!!!!!

    After watching... You completely dismissed the small person's best option: you recognized it as an option and then dismissed it suggesting you will not have access to a stick. Every piece of stickwork has knife/blade and empty-hand applications. You train with all three. It seems like you think it is "only" a weapon art. "Find something to use as a weapon". The moment you realize you may be in an altercation is the moment you identify anything that could be an improvised weapon or pathway to escape Position yourself near those weapons and pathways. If - hear me out - you are already looking for improvised weapons in your environment it would be in your best interest to get technical instruction on weapon use and practice using weapons that could be improvised. "Who's going to carry an Eskrima stick?" Why would I need to carry a stick when they are everywhere?

  • @JohnBoen
    @JohnBoen День тому

    Before watching: Some martial arts teach situational encounters and real throws with a partner. By learning encounters with real people instead of traditional forms practiced alone - you become competent earlier. You will need a school that trains how to hit a heavy bag. You do not hit training partners this hard - but you need to train at full force. The best way to equalize a combat advantage- whether this is size, weight, weaponry, or armor - is to use a weapon. Anything can be used as a weapon, and the most common class of things that can be used as weapons are "sticks". See a broken tree branch, or a discarded piece of PVC, or take action to break a piece of furniture... So - any art that teaches you how to use a stick - put those in the "keep" pile. I recommend a Kali school.

    I like it, because it teaches you to overrun your opponent. Watch a point fighter, they'll be more aggressive than someone who's afraid of getting knocked out. They'll Advance through their opponent, canceling out their offense. You couple those with someone who's throwing some heavy hands, one, you're jamming up their offense, and two, cutting down on the reaction time. I've done both, I prefer full contact, but point fighting has its strong suits as well.

    Hey, I have that shirt :) Also, I don't mind point sparring, but my system had such strict rules when it came to sparring that it ruined it. No spin kicks, no jump kicks (not like you would), light to no touch only, if you knock the head back, you lose a point. Was lame. My school has since closed and one of these days I will start a new system and hope to get some real sparring in.

      She did compete in tournament sparring early career in regional championships. She just found a calling and a skill in Kata divisions, and what makes her remarkable is how MANY she won, and defeating men competitors as well. It's not fair to say she has never been in an actual fight because we don't know that. Tournament fighting...isn't an actual fight either. Most people would agree that she's a major female pioneer in the martial arts and has earned that title.
